The research team recently received a three-year, $1.2 million grant
from the National Science Foundation to gather data and develop
sophisticated machine-learning tools capable of giving residents in
higher-risk Des Moines neighborhoods more time to prepare for dangerous
heat in their homes. The researchers are collaborating with officials
from the city of Des Moines, Polk County, the University of Northern
Iowa and the University of Texas at Arlington and plan to make their
tools widely available after the conclusion of the grant.
