Ulrike Passe, associate professor of architecture and director of the ISU Center for Building Energy Research, was selected to serve a six-year term on the PLEA (Passive and Low Energy Architecture) board of directors, beginning in March. The nonprofit organization engages in a global discourse on sustainable and urban design through annual international conferences, workshops and publications.
Ulrike Passe, associate professor of architecture and director of the ISU Center for Building Energy Research, collaborated with Baskar Ganapathysubramanian, professor of mechanical engineering; Fei Xu (PhD 2018 Mechanical Engineering), now a research and development engineer at Ansys Inc.; and Songzhe Xu (BS 2012 / PhD 2018 Mechanical Engineering), now a postdoc at the University of Utah, on a recent paper published in the international journal Sustainable Energy Technologies and Assessments.
‘Energy Savings and Daylighting Evaluation of Dynamic Venetian Blinds and Lighting through Full-Scale Experimental Testing’ by Niraj Kunwar, Kristen S.Cetin, Ulrike Passe, Xiaohui Zhou, Yunhua Li published in: Energy, Energy is an international, multi-disciplinary journal in energy engineering and research.
CBER’s research team is happy to introduce Manon Geraudin, 5th year student of civil engineering and urban planning at INSA (Institute National des Sciences Appliquees) Lyon, in France. She joined us at the end of October 2019 and will stay till the second half of March 2020. Her research expertise in Building and high environmental quality make her a prefect fit for our team.
“Modeling and data infrastructure for human-centric design and operation of sustainable, healthy buildings through a case study,” a paper coauthored by Ulrike Passe, associate professor of architecture and director of the Center for Building Energy Research, has been published in the international journal Building and Environment, Volume 170, March 2020.
On October 3rd, 2019, CBER Director Ulrike Passe was invited to a panel discussion about ‘The ROI of green buildings’ at the Iowa Ideas Conference in Cedar Rapids, Iowa organized by The Gazette
Time for Action! At an Iowa news conference, Ulrike Passe, associate professor and director of the Center for Building Energy Research at ISU and Jerry Schnoor, co-director of the Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research at the University of Iowa, met on Thursday to discuss climate change issues and building design.
We have had a research presentation tour for the Mobile Diagnostic Lab! The MDL was presented at the Research in the Capitol (RIC), National Celebration for Undergraduate Research (NCUR), and ISU Undergraduate Research Symposium.
As three of our members begin to prepare for graduation this May and December, CBER welcomes two new students: Rodcely Muro Garrido, Junior in Architecture; and Rob Agnes, Sophomore in Architecture.
The Mobile Diagnostic Lab (MDL) was completed by the end of August 2017. Interior finishes have been installed and new research is under development by Graduate Student Glenn Veigas and Prof. Behrouz Shafei by the end of the semester.
The German American Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest, Inc. (GACC Midwest) will host Energy Efficiency Innovation Seminars on Smart Buildings at four Midwestern universities: Iowa State, Illinois State, Michigan State and Northwestern.
This will be held on October 23 @ 2:30 pm – 5:00 pm in Design 416 at Iowa State University.
Ulrike Passe, an Iowa State University associate professor of architecture, presented her paper on “Performance, data and the expanding field of sustainable design” at the 6th International Alvar Aalto Meeting on Contemporary Architecture
U-Line finally has been completely installed, seam guides are in place and painted and flooring finishes are in place! The summer has been very productive in the amount of work we are doing. Students work vigorously to meet new September deadline.
Students work on constructing the wall partition between the mechanical and experimental spaces. The first layer of insulation has been placed. Plywood has been installed and U-Line is currently being stalled. We would also like to welcome Yoann Gorostiaga to the CBER team this semester and give an overall update of the team.
The Mobile Diagnostic Lab (MDL) will move forward with construction on Tuesday, January 24, 2017. Earlier this week the holes for the windows were cut into the facade which was the last piece we were waiting for before beginning construction.
The PIIR was launched by President Steven Leath in 2012 to help fund big data science teams across campus. Professor Ulrike Passe received a three-year award for data-driven decision making for sustainable cities.
Ulrike Passe, associate professor of architecture and director of the ISU Center for Building Energy Research, was unanimously elected president-elect of the Society of Building Science Educators.
Team CBER ran their sixth experiment (Mar7-8th) at the interlock. Using over 70 sensors the team made time not only to set up but to also meet with Mike our mechanical specialist and run through some test. The team meet with the occupants on strategies for creating a confortable environment while maintaining a non-hassle routine.
The American Solar Energy Society (ASES) 19th Annual National Solar Tour will make a stop in Iowa this year at the Interlock House Community Laboratory. The house will have an open tour from 1pm~4pm on Oct. 3 and 4.

Extremely mobile and easily adjustable, these sensor trees have been designed to take accurate measurements at designated heights throughout the Interlock house.
Finally, talking about the weather is no longer small talk. This fall, the CBER (Center for Building Energy Research) team will be working toward understanding what it’s really like to live in a passive solar home that uses building design for climate control instead of mechanical means (such as air conditioning).
